Description

CISV will work with the Red Cross in Almería, in the southern coast of Spain. In the last fifteen years, illegal aliens
have been arriving in great numbers to this region. They cross the Mediterranean sea using little boats called
“pateras”, and reach the coast by the hundreds every year, mostly in the summer. After the first aid in the beach,
immigrants who aren’t immediately repatriated are moved into Red Cross camps where they are allowed to stay
for a year. Throughout this year, immigrants receive psychological attention, legal support, medical care, sanitarian
and alimentary education, Spanish lessons and all sorts of workshops to improve their skills. During this time, once
more, some of them are repatriated. After this year, the immigrants the authorities couldn’t repatriate find
themselves in the streets. Most of them find occupation in agriculture. They work for a small pay and live in the
countryside, in shantytowns. The Red Cross assist the illegal aliens in all this three phases. CISV participants will
work as Red Cross volunteers and will develop their own projects based on both their previous knowledge and
know-how and their learning experience within this project.
