Note that the countries listed were invited in Round 1 and that this information may change in later Rounds. Partner OrganisationCISV Fredericton is partnering with the New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL) for an IPP in July, 2011. NBACL works on behalf of children and adults with intellectual disabilities and their families to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities, with the support of their families, have the options to choose the supports they need to live meaningful lives and participate in their communities as valued and contributing members. Participants will come together with families of children with an intellectual disability at a beautiful, rustic lakeside summer camp to learn from each other and to share and grow in a fun, casual atmosphere. . DescriptionTogether with the partner organization and through sharing how persons with intellectual disabilities and their families are supported in participants’ home cultures, IPP participants will explore the theme of Sharing, Learning, Growing: Working With Children and Adults With Intellectual Disabilities and Their Families. Related topics may be intellectual disability, human rights, inclusive practices, support of persons with disabilities, real respite, and celebrating diversity. Participants will help NBACL and each other learn what is happening in the disability movement in other countries. Participants will also plan and run a 5 day retreat experience for a group of families and their children, some of whom have an intellectual disability. This will include: a 2 day summer camp for siblings of children with an intellectual disability; three days of activities for kids of all ages; participating in and facilitating parent discussions and exchange groups; and planning and participating in evening social activities.
The Fredericton CISV chapter is looking for participants who are patient, accepting, empathetic, respectful of differences, and energetic. Participants should value equality and inclusion, and be willing and interested in working and communicating with children and adults with an intellectual disability, and their families. This IPP is particularly relevant to individuals who are working in the field of disability or who have a family member or close friend with an intellectual disability.
The New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL) is the partner organization for this IPP. NBACL is a provincial non-profit organization that works on behalf of children and adults with an intellectual disability, and their families. Since 1957, NBACL has been working to build inclusive communities where persons with an intellectual disability can live, work, learn and actively participate as valued and contributing members. More information on NBACL can be found on their website: www.nbacl.nb.ca
NBACL, as well as the families who will be attending the retreat, are very interested in learning about what is happening in the disability movement in other countries. Beyond learning about what is happening in Canada, IPP participants should arrive with knowledge about how their country and/or culture addresses persons with an intellectual disability, to share with the rest of the IPP group, NBACL, and the families attending the retreat. Examples of possible knowledge to bring with you include: What supports are there for persons with an intellectual disability in your country? What supports are available for their families? In general, are persons with an intellectual disability included in your school classrooms? Do they live at home with their families? Are they employed? How are persons with an intellectual disability treated in your country?
NBACL families attending the retreat will be hosting the IPP participants at a “Maritime Family Kitchen Party”, allowing IPPers the opportunity to experience Atlantic Canadian food and music. We are also hoping IPPers will host a “multicultural night” for fellow IPP participants and the NBACL families.
