2011GermanyThemeHuman Rights LocationThe Mainz/Wiesbaden DatesJuly 5, 2011 to July 21, 2011 DelegationsPartner OrganisationThe Mainz/Wiesbaden chapter will work with a local organization, IfB e.V. - Interessengemeinschaft für Behinderte, that works for the inclusion of people with disabilities in the society. They respect the right of people with disabilities for self-determination and how they shape their lives. IfB recognizes and accepts their needs and possibilities and offers appropriate help in any phase of their lives, from day care of disabled children to services for parents and relatives living with disabled people at home and in homes for handicapped. They offer the possibility for disabled to learn a profession and to work in a sheltered place. DescriptionThe IPP will explore the theme: The Social Position of Disabled People in our Society. The purpose of this IPP is to give the participants the understanding that people with mental and/or physical disabilities have feelings, can express themselves and deserve an important place in our society. They should learn that people with disabilities have the right for self-determination. Participants should arrive with knowledge about how their culture addresses persons with disabilities to share with the rest of the IPP group and the partner organization. During the working phase of the project, IPP participants will be interacting and assisting children and adults with disabilities (mentally and/or physically) with a variety of life sustaining (eating, dressing etc.) and life enhancing (fun and enriching) programs. They will also do physical work like gardening, building a new playground for the kids and renovating a building of the Partner Organisation. So we have interest in two different kinds of participants: the ones who want to work with the disabled people and the ones who want to work with their hands for the disabled people. All participants should be patient, tolerant, open to new situations and have a sense of humor, energy, and empathy. They should be willing and interested in working and communicating with children and adults with a variety of disabilities, but prior experience in working with disabilities is not required.
