Porta Aperta (Caritas)

Description

Porta Aperta (Open Door) provides many services to the community including: emergency basic accommodation and meals to homeless people; social consultants for immigrants (who give advice on legal issues, housing, work permits etc.); houses for young immigrants, single mothers in distress, lonely elderly people and people with psychological problems; distribution of clothes, furniture and toys to families in need.
Each group of participants worked on different sub-projects, one took place in the Porta Apera (Open Door) house. Every evening the delegates helped to serve and had dinner together with the people who use Porta Aperta, established a contact with them and provided much needed human interaction. We also spent a wonderful New Year´s Eve all together in Porta Aperta.
Concerning the educational part of the project participants should explore the theme in their own country before the project. During the camp there were a couple of field trips and each country had a national presentation about a marginalised group in thier own country. One aim was that delegates should come to feel at ease around people who are often marginalised (immigrants, people with mental illnesses, the elderly or the poor) and learn about the problems facing these groups.
